Need to do a little work on the heads. Bigger valves and some port work.

I have a 305(14010203) block with edelbrock performer cam and lifters matching eddy intake, eddy 600 cfm carb stock 601 heads attached to a 700r4 dynoed at 240hp/230tq. Pretty fun for me and less than 1000 bucks to do

You started out with wanting to know how to build a 370hp 305 then went to a 300hp 265 and now you're at a 300hp 305. Why not get a dime a dozen 350 out of a junkyard and and build that? You can build a very mild 350 at 300 hp.

i think what is making everyone curious is why a 305?
generally people beef up 305's because they lack the money to pull it and put in a 350, but if your buying a set of heads, cam, intake and a new carb why not buy a 350? that is what is confusing.

That's where you cut your losses and move on. You can build any engine you choose but keep in mind that the same parts you put in a 305 can make ~25-30 more hp just by bolting them on a 350. On top of that, a 350 will drop right in place of your 305 without any modifications.

do a Craig's List search in your area for a 350 vortec engine (complete engine, 1996 to 2000).

these factory roller engines make 300hp with only a set of headers, intake, and carb.

don't worry about the number of main bolts.

The best year is the 96 to 2000 350 vortec engine.
