best gear for a 39 Chevy sedan?

I am building a 39 chevy four-door sedan. It will have a 350 with tune port injection and a 700R4 transmission. I have an 8" rear end from a ford maverick. It has 2.79 gears. I also have a set of 3.00 gears from a Torino. I think the 39 4-door is around 3000 lbs. I am building a driving car and would like a good street gear, but don't want to lug the motor. What gear would give the best performance, but still have a decent gas mileage? Thanks for any info..

Yep, somewhere around 3.70 will work well with that overdrive trans.

This will help: http://tri-5.chevyrides.com/rpm.php

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 3:70 if mostly in the city (98%) and 3:50 if you do a lot of over 70MPH driving

If you've got

an 8", you're looking at a 3.80:1 gear set. What is the
OD gearing of a 700R4?? It'll be quite zippy in town for
certian...

Thanks for the info guys. I would be doing mostly highway driving. Blossom has a population of 1495 people. It doesn't take long to get out of town.
