Where is the best place to measure water temp in a Gen 1 small block chevy?? The water is probably the hottest as it exits the block through the thermostat located in the intake manifold, so that should be the best place to measure water temp at right?

technically hottest would be closest to cylinder water jackets because this is where the combustion takes place.

but it doesnt really matter where and GM has used a cylinder head(69-up), and the intake(55-68) over the years on the SBC and 90 degree v-6 engines.

good luck

I have the stock sensor in the driver's side head, and have tried my mechanical gauge in both the passenger side head and in the intake manifold (where it is now).

Many folks assume the temp measured at the head will be hotter (makes sense), but in my engine there was very little difference - maybe five degrees hotter than the sensor in the intake.
