ok, what type of vehicle is this set-up in? What will it's uses be, i.e. street, strip, towing. Also, what type of housing, you said a 3.08 gear but is it a 10 bolt, or 12-bolt.

According to this Tire Size Calculator , those two tire sizes are fairly comparable ...
The 275/50's are 25.82" dia (81.11" circumference)
The 235/60's are 26.10 dia (81.99" circumference)

Summit racing has a chart and formula that will give you some insight as to what to expect as well.

If this car is going to see ONLY or at least a MAJORITY of street use ... then lower gears might be fun ... but if it's going to see the highway at all, youll want to see either and OD trans or lower ratios, IMHO.

I'm thinking that anything over ~3000 -3200 RPM sustained can't be good. That translates to 3.90 to 4.10 ratio in your case.

2nd Chance ...
According to that chart and your tire size ... I'd get that speedo checked. I have a hunch that you're going faster than you think at that RPM.

Yeah ... I think the 3:56's would be a "reasonable" choice.

2800 cruise rpm should be ok for about a 1 or 2-hr highway jaunt ... and switching to a "built" OD trans later would be an option.

I had a '68 Torino C6 trans, G60-14's, 3.50 gears ... which put the cruise RPM in about that 3200 range. I drove it 60 miles from home to the track ... with no apparent effect.

A buddy had a camaro with 4:10's and 15" tires ... he also ran about the same cruise RPM as I did on the same trip.
