I love weird ugly cars! that being said, I love the volvo 740/760 wagon with the ford 302 conversion. My favorite car to date is the 87 GLHS Dodge omni!! That is one hell of a sleeper. I know a guy that has a 89 Dodge Caravan with a 450hp 4 banger Ford ranger would make a good sleeper and the dodge Dakota has some potential. Again I like weird ugly cars!!!

All good replies! To the one guy I don't think the 90's Caprices were "beautiful" looking cars but some did have Lt1s and I heard LS1s can fit.
The late 70's Caprice sounds good, so does the Ford Ranger and of course the F-150.

one of the best things about amc, is the amc gremelin. My uncle said it was ugly, but really low geared! He said it only took a second to get up to 60 mile an hour in the thing of coarse idk what gears were in there but he said they were low. That was with a straight six, of coarse chevy 350 and a 700r4 that would be one of the koolest sleepers, haha no one would even expect that

When I was younger, I always thought about taking a Ford Maverick and turning it into the ultimate sleeper. It wouldn't take much, but a healthy 351 cid would have made one launch hard.

Dirt cheap, and would have embarrassed many a Camaro.

Like Poncho and Hippie said: Non Mustang/Capri Fox Bodies and the 78-90's b-body wagons are good picks.

Also there's all of the old BMW's, Jags and Volvos to even the 240/280z datsuns that someone's crammed a SBC into. Ramzoom has a pretty cool setup with his Rambler, it's quite a sleeper to me.

Ponch has a good idea, I like those old Fords and I would also go to the police auctions for a used cop car. Most always well maintained, fairly quick, well built cars. A quicky paint job and some striping, a nice looking car!

No Sleeper

I have got into more trouble in my Vette than the Fiero, the Vette is currently on my carport getting repaired from an off road experience.

well if you want the reliability of a 350 block, and the stroke of a 400, the torque specs of a 383 is up your alley.. But you save $ with a 350 and vortec heads are really decent flowing heads 300+ hp and torque easy. Im currently in with a 400 vortec project, if you like follow my thread, it will be at the begin of fall that i start building it. And it might save money putting vortecs on your 305 put a roller cam in it, get 350 hp +

late 70s to early/mid 80s GM G body(olds cutlass etc). Still RWD so you can put in a real motor and tranny. Can be found cheap.

...anything ugly and has performance potential.

Chevrolet Caprice (leave the granny hubcaps on, and use a fairly quiet performance muffler.) After replacing the fluids, be sure to put some 3.73 gears out back, or 4.10s if you want it snappy. Hiway friendly gears are good for mpg, but hurt acceleration.

I'd mention Crown Vic/Marquis but the 4.6 seems a bit short on torque to move the boats, it's a good motor when it revs though. Read about regearing above.

S10/Ranger/Dakota. If they can't hear the v8, they won't know it's a v8. Light enough you could probably get away with highway gears, but pickups usually have something around 3.43s-3.55s.

2wd fullsize truck. Save the weight of the 4x4 stuff. Biggest engine you can find, standard cab, shortbox would be ideal.

If you want to buy something with better mpg than a v8... and are pretty ambitious...

3800 v6 Camaro/Firebird. Turbo it. I've always wanted to do this. Great performance with good mpg. The Buick GNX guys can help you. Stock gears are 3.23s or 3.33s or something like that. Not sure how the gearing will affect the turbo and such, as I'm told turbo engines like a load to work their best.
