I'm DREAM"IN for a 4 speed, but a bad fall from a running horse put an end to

i would suggest a C4 trans, Your car may have the C4

look at your trans, see if the main case is aluminum with bolt on bell housing of aluminum.

Cast iron main case is Cruis-O matic

1 piece aluminum case (bell housing does not bolt on) would be a 2 speed auto

A modestly modified C4 will handle up to 400Hp and will be a real nice addition. If it already has one, then a shift kit will help some, but it really needs some "hardened" parts if you beat on it any. A C6 will not fit the tranny tunnel without surgery to the floor pan - plus it's big physically and heavy and may not bolt up to some early vintages of SB Fords

She has many needs, her front end is shot, had a repaint 30 yrs ago
and the "meadowbrook yellow" is showing thru in chips and cracks....
(like bad make up on a cheap whore!!) But she has a great body no bondo or lead, interior is fair.

Sounds like a candidate for a winter's worth of reconstructive surgery and maybe a few tender lovin' caresses with a DA then a fresh application of make up.

A different approach

Pay a visit to this site and do some reading www.clickclickracing.com I think going with a well built AOD would be better than a C4 hands down.
