Best way to aproach this

I do mostly exterior repaints, but have a 1965 Mustang I am working on. I have already painted the fenders, doors piece parts met allic blue. I am now starting the car, fenders and doors off.

Give me a quick rundown on how you would proceed pleeeeeeese !!! I need to paint the dash, floor, engine and trunk compartments. It has a new headliner in it which I will have to cover up. Do I prep everything first ? Should I use the Rustoleam Satin black for the firewall, floor and trunk area ? Spray it reduced ??

A friend of mine has a restoration shop and proceeds this way :: I usually get everything ready to paint as if you were going to paint everything all at once.I then tape out the firewall and engine compartment and interior and paint the exterior,door jambbs and inside the trunk all at once as the trunk is supposed to be the same color as the outside of the car.Then I sand and buff quarters,roof and cowl area.Then tape out and paint dash whtever color it gets and then ,yes,rusoleum satin black on the firewall and engine compartment including the front of the radiator support.Is this clear as mud.It should take you a few weeks to do all of it.

Just seemed strange to paint and buff the exterior first ??

Looking for more ideas , maybe his is a good idea ??

You re friends suggestion is ok! but always do it the way it feels best! its not such a God idea to paint exterior parts separately the Collor can be different! look differant

Why would you do all that prep work and then use rust-o-lium ?????

Kind a thought the same thing , my buddy has been restoring cars for 25 years . What should I use , a couple of coats of good epoxy primer ??

Isnt the fire wall & dash metalic blue also?

The dash is blue. He wants the firewall black. How about the order or sequence of events ??

Would you paint these areas in a different order ?? Trying to find the best way as to which to paint first. I have done mostly exterior repaints.

There is a logic to your buddies sequence of painting. Prepping everything first minimizes the risk of damaging any finished area later and then masking off the interiaor and painting the exterior is also sensible. The interior is hard to mask and if it were painted first and then poorly masked you would have overspray to fix, if you paint the exterior first it is much easier to mask off with less chance of overspray. Sparaying door jambs and inside of trunk before the exterior is logical.
Since he uses rustoleum for the engine compartment i can see why he buffs the exterior first. The buffing process is messy and the rustoleum paint is soft and the buffing compound can stain it, so do the buffing first, mask off the exterior and shoot the rustoleum last. The sequence sounds like it was learned from previous mistakes and I see no problem with it.
As to the rustoleum, I would not use it, I have used epoxy primer as well as a 2k flat black from kirker, both products came out looking the same and I think the kirker is a little easier to maintain. If you already have a black epoxy then I would just use that.

Sounds good to me ,I'd start with the dash and work my way out.Scuff the crap out of it and use a lot of W&G and an adheasion promoter.That way what ever paint you use will stick.I'd go with a better paint sprayed with a jamb gun
