Assuming this is a Chevy...The best way is to use a stud puller. But if you don't have one. Stack washers up till you can get an upside down retainer and a rod nut on the good threads. Then lube everything up and tighten nut till you run out of threads. loosen, add washers, repeat till stud comes out.

If no good threads. Run a fine thread die the next size smaller (sometimes a metric). Find a nut that fits. Repeat the above..

Get a screw in "Repair" stud. 3/8 top -7/16 base. No hex. Thread (tap) hole carefully for 7/16 thread. double nut new stud, sealer and tighten to about 45 lbs. You are done..

Im not quite sure how it got stripped. Im fixing it for a friend. Im guessing it had been over tightened with a nut i had not seen before(looks aluminium with a small
allen installed at the top, for a guide im guessing, but has a smaller area of thread than a more standard nut). It had stripped the last 5/16" of the stud...

***Problem fixed. ended up rethreading the stud with a 3/8" die, went easy, and the standard nut ended up fitting great! i was still nervous about the damage so i used a fair amount of thread lock, adjusted rocker arms acordingly, let it sit for a bit and fired it up.
put 5 miles in for a test no problems.... yet.
