Which is better Hydrallic Roller or Solid,Mechanical roller

I wanted to post to see which would be best to go with for a street/strip engine.I know the valve adjustment will have to made more often with a solid cam,but I don't mind that much.I have heard that a mechanical makes more power, and is more consistent. Is a mechanical and Solid the same,.Not sure but I believe it is.Any help on the ups and down will help. Then I will consider which cam to run.My springs are set up for a 680 max lift, and are for roller cams thanks for looking

it depends on how you want to use your engine.

the problem with hydraulic cams is when you get into high revs you get valve float. mind you, you would really have to be producing some serious revs to run into that problem.

if this is just a street application then i wouldn't be too worried about switching to a solid lifter cam. solid cams require more maintenance and are noisier.

Would it be lifter noise, and I probably would shift at 6000-6500,which ever works best.I could handle valve adjustment, but would it sound like the motor would need oil?I have never used a solid cam before.

dboyett38666, Your open valve spring pressure, more or less, dictates what type cam/lifters to use. Max pressure for any hydraulic would be about 320 or so, for a mechanical, about 650 and you don't want to use stock valves if you have high seat pressure. For a serious street/strip engine, I think a flat tappet solid would be the best way to go. E-mail me with the spring info and I can make a recommendation.

boyett, given that cam choice is likely the single most important choice of any combination, I think I would go to a reputable cam grinder and be prepared to give him specifics of your entire combination and your intended use of the engine and allow the grinder to make cam, spring, rocker and valve recommendations.
