Betty Crocker meets Stewart Warner

Hi guys.

I'm getting set to fire up / break in my 454 which is sitting on the frame ... no cab.

I wanted to be able to monitor the "vital signs" while doing the break-in, and came up with the idea of mounting a tach and guages, temporarily, on some kind of metal instrument panel.

I started eyeing up the wife's aluminum cake pan, but she said "Go get your own!" ... so I did.

A $5.00 steel brownie pan did the trick! (Actually, I bought two of them ... in case I screwed the first one up ... and sure enough, I did!)

I also added a universal ignition switch, just to make starting and stopping that much easier.

I'll use this one for now, but will re-do it and keep it for "next time" (?).

Not to sidetrack this thread...but honest to God true story. My wife caught 454Rattler in the local Wal Mart while he was "shopping" for that cake pan he used on his firewall. Boy was HE doing a lot of splainin'. "Why Jerry," she said tapping him on the shoulder as he stood in front of the housewares section with a nice big pan in his hand. "Have you taken up baking?"

Kitchen to garage

Whenever prowling garage or rummage sales, I always pick up old aluminum and steel baking pans and pots for use in the shop. The grungier the better and the cheaper!
Besides 66GMC's novel use, they are great for holding small parts during work or storage or cleaning.
Want to check a thermostat? Grab that old 25 cent pot and heat it up with a gas torch without fear of getting clipped in the back of the head by the lady of the house.

Yup...a bread pan. (I stole the idea shortly after my wife caught 454 buying that cake pan.)

Mount everything from the other side and have "Frenched Bread gauges"? LOL. Me like kitchen items in the garage.
