Big block 292???

my buddy says ford made a 292 big block in the 60's...i dont know if i believe him. is he full of crap?

Hi,
The 292 & 312 were Y blocks, there were some other displacements also 272 I think, they were more
truck engines then big blocks in the 60es, in the 50es the 292 & 312s were used in cars, I guess you could call them BBks, as that's as big as you could get in a ford until 58

big block 292

in australia 292 & 272 y blocks came out in the later model customline.as for the 312 i dont know.big blocks came out in early tank fairlanes 331 & early galaxies 390. hope this helps ,maybe you should bet him a box of beer that they didnt.

First, "big block" and "small block" are BS terms with no fixed definition. They really relate to Chevy, which has two very distinct engine families. Ford (as usual) has a multitude of options, none interchangeable...

As others have noted, Ford did make a 292 (and 272 and 312) in the 50s and early 60s. The Y-block was the replacement for the flathead. The 312 version was famously used in the 55-57 T-birds.

The FE-series replaced the Y-block, originally as a 331, then growing to 352, 390, 406, 427, and 428 (along with other displacement stops along the way).
