big block chevy 496

I am building a bbc 496 and I have seen a few making lots of torque and hp and was wondering is it possible to make either 600 or 700 hp and torque with a stock ported head 390 I am open to any suggestion towards this combo.

It would be in your best interest to purchase a set of aftermarket aluminum heads that can produce the hp you want. You would have to spend over $500 on the 390 heads done with 2.19/1.88 stainless steel valves, hardened exhast seats, new springs and brass valve guides. Then they need to be ported by someone that knows what they are doing. Last time I checked on getting a set of oval ports ported I was quoted $1500. You see why its better to go with a new set of aluminum heads.

AFR 290s are what you need to make 700 HP. The stock heads will run out of breath in the low 500s. ported 390s will get you over 600 hp
All of these head combinations will require the correct cam/cr and other supporting equipment
