Big Block Chevy combination question

Hi all, I have a question for the Big Block builders out there.

I just purchased a 72 Chevelle with a 454 that needs a rebuild. Car needs a "little" work. (read: the car is completely disassembled) I've built several small block Chevy's before, some for daily driving, some for street high performance, but never have I built a Big Block.

My question is this, what is a good high performance street (91 octane) combination that will survive in the heat of the desert, won't behave too badly on the street, but also will be able to lay down some good numbers when I take it to the track.

Any advice is appreciated.

(Turbo 400, 2000 Stall, 3.23 gears is the rest of the important stuff)

Do a stock rebuild, RV cam, and thats it. You will be real happy with the results. Those are a great, torquey engine. Don't go too wild and you will be happy.

I don't mean to confuse the issue, but I also have a Big Block that I'm building and I was wondering what you call an RV cam? About what size is considered for an RV?

In 72 a stock 454 was rated at about 300 hp. This was misleading due to the decreased compression ratio. It had a ton of torque, which you want more anyways. An RV cam is not just for RVs. Its is also called a mileage or towing cam, It is high lift, short duration, that gives better bottom end and torque right up to above 5000 rpm, excelent street cam.
The crane energizers are RV cams.
You said you wanted street performance at a decent price, thats why I say don't go overboard.

As simple as it sounds go to the Edelbrock site and look up the Performer RPM package for the 454. I built one for a customer a couple years back and he loves it. It's basically a .030 over 454 with the Edelbrock RPM heads, cam, and intake. We put a Holley 850 on it and a MSD7AL box and MSD distributor. His car is a 3400 pound 67' Chevelle, Turbo 400 w/ 3500 converter, 4.56 gears. The thing starts and idles like a champ and is very driveable. To top it off the thing turns 10.90's all day long with slicks and open headers. He has taken it to many street cruise nights all capped up with street tires and mufflers and says it's a blast.

Some people don't equate Edelbrock to making big power but I feel the combos they do have are pretty dependable and user friendly.

Thanks for the advice guys, I was told the block has an RV cam in it, but I was leaning towards the Performer RPM package anyhow. Once I get the block apart, I'll know what shape the internals are in, and I'll know how much work is in front of me. After that I'll figure out where I want to go with it.

Thanks again.
