Big block chevy problem

I am restoring a 70 chevelle with a 396. I pulled out the motor and transmission to both repaint the block and have the tranny rebuilt. I reinstalled them and attempted to fire the motor. It runs fine for about 5-10 seconds and then makes a really loud squeak sound (almost like a loose alternator belt), except the P/S pump and alternator are not connected yet. I have really good oil pressure and the motor ran flawlessly just before I pulled it. Any ideas?

Does it continue to run...? Also is the water pump connected (noticed the alt & PS were not)...

I would make sure the starter is not hanging up first but could be a bearing...? Check the starter/flywheel first then it would be time to pull the distributor (check it also) and block up the engine and pull the pan... If its a bearing then the more you run it the worse it will get...

BTW was the engine rebuilt also...?

Sounds like the trans? Remove the 3 converter bolts and slide the converter back into the trans pump and re-start. If its now quiet, the trans is the problem.

The engine was not rebuilt. The water pump was not connected either. I rolled under the car and noticed that the starter gear was still enguaged with the flexplate. Could that make such a loud squeak? It's fine for the first 5 or 6 seconds. Then it makes that noise. I thought about the bearings as well, but since I never took the engine apart, the chances, I thought were low. Also, could it be my new transmission? That is the only piece that was touched. I just never heard a tranny make that noise before.

It turned out to be the tranny. Thanks for your help, everyone.
