big block fuel pump?

Hi, im running into a problem with my 78 stepside, the fuel pump on my 454 has a return line but the truck originally came with a sbc so theres no line going to the tank. Can i run a sbc fuel pump on this thing or is there another way, i might end up just getting an elecric pump but the less money i spend the better. Thanks, Jake

pump return line.

Hi Jake, what i did was to take off the gas cap,and remove the fill spout,AWAY from the car i used a short piece if 1/4 inch brake line, and welded it into the fill spout (near the end closest to the tank).then a 4 inch piece of gas line to the brake line, and used 2 clamps on each end of the line then ran a brake line (with a rubber )connector from the pump , all the way to the tank (mine was 48 ford coupe)and a used 8 clamps total, also,i clamped the brake line to the chassis. its been working for over4 years.

i always just cap off the return port on the pump with a short length fuel hose and a bolt hose-clamped in the hose end and run it,

no problem here.

just cap it off

some sbc trucks had return line to tank to the pump,
it was pretty random, not sure why,

i have owned around 100 different factory sbc trucks '73-up over the years, as drivers or parts trucks, etc,

and they randomly were with or without the tank return line,

most have had one though.

have fun!

Might get a pump for an older vehicle.
Also---check The applications for Auto trans vs manual trans.

If I am not mistaken----the factory manual trans vehicles had no return
