big change for our biggest website pages

The two most popular pages on Hotrodders.com -- our board main page, and our website home page, prominently feature a selection of threads from the board.

These threads take up the single biggest chunk of space on each of those pages. Once a thread is featured on one of those pages, many more people will read it -- often 10 times as many as a normal thread.

We're going to hand control of these prominent spaces of Hotrodders.com to our board members.

Here's how:

We're going to use the current board thread rating system. This system is used to assign 1-5 star ratings to threads. It only takes a few seconds to rate a thread -- the easy process is described here: http://hotrodders.com/help/board/tips/rating.html .

We're going to take the threads that you rate the highest, and we're going to feature them in the largest spaces on the busiest pages on Hotrodders.com.

Obviously, we can't let anyone who just walked in the door here decide what gets put on our biggest and busiest pages for the whole world to see. So, we're going to limit the ability to rate threads to people with a post count of 1000 or more.

I understand that this is rather arbitrary. I know we have guys on the board with less than 1000 posts who could give us excellent input on what threads should be featured. And I understand that some members may prefer not to include the input of some who are in the 1000+ group. Nevertheless, the overall average rating of this group is very valuable.

We can adjust the 1000+ post requirement up or down as we see fit. Since this process is similar to a magazine allowing its subscribers to decide what gets put on the front page, so we'll have to observe it carefully and see how it turns out.

Ideas, feedback, opinions, criticism -- please let me know in this thread.

I rate that reply a "2" Killer. I would have given you a 3 or 4, but you capitalized the SH in should.

I guess this all sounds great for the 1,000+ club. The brite red bar at the bottom of message threads where the 1,000+ club rates a thread is blinding my eyes every time I get to the bottom of a thread now. How do magazines use a simular approach? I thought they just got letters in the mail from everyone and the majority ruled.

Sounds cool Jon.

I have to wonder if the lounge post count.....and I hope they dont. I see people rating the lounge threads and alot of the rated threads are crapola IMO.

Just curious,

Chris

yeah, but crapola by what standard? I think a discussion that doesn't get out of hand and stays on topic, gets a 3 in my book. Obviously the threads in the tech forums are judged by a more strict standard. I'm going to try not to rank threads on topics I don't know much about (inner workings of automatic trans etc) that way the people who know the info best can decide if its good or not.

The idea of the front page from what I gather is to attract new people to interesting threads with good technical discussion and knowledge.

I quickly scanned the lounge and picked a victim thread. I want to first say it is nothing personal AT ALL, but the following thread is not something I think that most people who do not know Ghetto Jet would want to read, but it is rated as a 5 star thread.

http://www.hotrodders.com/t53440.html

It may be a very poor example, but the best I could come up with in 30 seconds. I think that we could end up with a bunch of stuff that not too many people are interested in. I would think that the technical discussions are of alot more value than to know that someone got their car running.

I guess it depends on what you use the board for. I like to discuss tech stuff and find alot of the other to be noise. Perhaps those who hang out in the lounge most of the time to just chat like the noise.

Cool idea Jon.

Hey I'm a member of the elite 1000+ club now, I'll have to get decals made for us.

Chris, I agree with you about my thread making it onto main page, you would have to have been around here for a while to even know what I'm talking about.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have some 5 star ratings to give my threads.
