I've never seen this before. I have a 12v battery that turns the positive terminal black.

I removed the battery, cleaned the terminals, and charged it. Within a day or so the positive terminal turned black. The battery sat on the bench for 2-3 weeks. I then reinstalled it and tried to start the vehicle. No luck.

I pulled the battery again and went through the same clean and charge drill. Again, the terminal turned black within a day.

Any ideas? Is the battery toast? What causes this?

You have a Crack around the positive terminal that is allowing hydrogen sulfide gasses to attack the lead...

You can replace the battery if it requires constant charge, or you can paste the terminal where it goes into the battery case with 5 minute epoxy or orange RTV gasket maker and let it dry..But I'd replace it.

I figured something wasn't right. I'm trying to sell the car, so I may try and seal it. I know how it happened. My son-in-law gave the terminals a couple of whacks...to ensure they were tight!
