Post Block Identification

How do I identify what engine I have? I have finally got ahold of a SBC for my stock car, to take the place of the Olds 350. What numbers do you guys need to find out what I got. I have two sets of numbers off the block. One is: 395618
Second is: V0410x1

do these #'s help whatsoever? If not what #'s do you need?

well here is a reliable source, but your id number checks out as either a 350, 327, or 302 from '68 or '69 as either a 2 or 4 bolt main. According to this site, it was probably a camaro engine...thats assuming the first number was not off of the cylinder head...Mortec

There is the site link, check it out for any id stuff, they are pretty good...And I have never seen the type of the second number you referred to before...where did it come from on the engine?

According to my info a 3955618 block came as 68-69 327 engine.
and 3956618 was a 69-70 302 or 350 block.
your number is 395618 so I suspect you miss read the numbers, check them again to make sure.
either way it looks like a good starting point for a hipo engine, good luck

OK so I have read the numbers better and have found I missed one as you suspected. It reads 3956618. So either 350, or 302 (I wish a 302)but doubt it.

I have also got the # off the crank and it read 3922442, so a cast med. journal 3.48 stroke. Does the 3.48 stroke mean its a 350, by looking at the pistons I would guess 250, cause they look big.

One more question would this motor have come with flat top pistons? This one has flat tops.

442 cranks are common cast 350, if the motor is 69-70 it would have flat top pistons from the factory, but check the piston tops for oversizes, a factory piston will have a GM number on the inside of the skirt and a letter code on the top such as an F or G or H or K etc. these match the pistons to each bore size.
