Is it possible that that would have caused my engine to blow?
The tinfoil/cap/cardboard thing would not- in and of itself- cause the engine to blow.
Now, if something had been poured into the engine to contaminate or dilute the motor oil for example, THAT could have caused it to fail.
When you drain the oil, pay attention to its appearance (thin or thick, normal color or not) and the smell (like gasoline or some other solvent), and check the oil for having sand or some other substance in it, other than some metal debris from the engine failure itself.
