It seems very unlikely that anything like that could result in engine failure since there are several places under the valve cover that would allow the oil to return back to the pan. I have personally seen engines with more than one of these little under cap seals from oil jugs under a filler cap. And never has it caused engine failure, that I am aware of. The most likely occurrences are oil pump failure, oil pump cavitation from lack of oil or driving in the wrong gear, oil pump pick up tube separation from pump, and or over revving the engine for a prolonged period of time. Usually when these things happen the connecting rod bearings in the center of the motor seize on the crank first resulting in a deep knocking sound and spun bearings. Careful inspection of the oil pump at dis-assembly would be advisable. Secondly a careful look at the cooling system would be in order.
