Assuming that carrier is the same as any run-of-the-mill 7.5 carrier that could be had at the wreckers for like $30.00 ...
Ta da dump, ta da dump, ta da dump-dump-dump. Otherwise ... take it to a good machine shop and ask them if they think it could be repaired properly, and at what cost. |

Go to a full spool and stop wastin money. Lighlly ter, less rotating weight, stronger, same amount of money.
BTW, Fully Floated rear axle is a much better idea. It's gonna save you a car someday. |

I think I might hand file the bearing bores smooth and sand with 600 grit till smooth, than reuse it. But don't spend much money so your not out anything if it blows up.

blown up mini spool
Axles are locked to mini spool, mini spool is locked to cross pin, cross pin is locked to carrier. Nothing is rotating at a different rate, so there is no rotaing wear to these pieces Hand dress the damaged area smooth and install your new spool. You might want to magnaflux the carrier to make sure it isn't about too fail somewhere else, and definately a NEW cross pin.
7.5/7.625 are pretty weak, replacing the carrier with a used oem piece that hasn't been beat would be the smart move. Depends on your budget, and how confident you are in the old pieces.

Check the hole in the carrier, if you can put the mini spool in the carrier and move the mini spool side to side the carrier may be worn and it will let the mini spool move side to side when it should be held stable.
All your power is driving thru that center pin and you don't want to add any extra stress. By looking at your pic and with the hub being broke off the mini spool I'm wondering if your carrier might have been worn to begin with,That's usually what causes that. |

Just wanted to do a follow up...
Fired my mechanic LOL Brought it to a guy that does the rear ends locally. He put new welded up spider gears and used the same carrier. He said everything inside looked good. He also straightened and welded one tube. Did the job in a couple days $125.00 total. Of course I gave him all the parts except the spiders and oil and he replaced the broken locking screw. It was 100% complete, oiled and ready to go. FYI I have seen crazy ways of welding up spider gears but this is the way to do it right so it holds up: http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...d_Spiders.html thanx for everyones input! -=Fred=- Last edited by dirtinla; 02-04-2009 at 08:19 AM. |
