A backfire through the exhaust is normally a sign of being lean. Since you replaced the fuel pump, did you replace the filter? There may be more than one filter as well. A clogged filter can cause intermittent problems, though normally not at idle.

Also double check all of you electrical connections to and from the ECU and coil. Pull one plug wire at a time and double check for a strong spark. The distributor may need help.

There are many things that could cause you problem, you just have to eliminate one at a time.
