body filler
I am looking to find a good body filler. I have worked with Bondo a few times in the past but was not too thrilled in the results. I have heard that there are newer products that are easier and smoother in the application process. I am also wanting to make sure it is not going to bleed through my paint. Do I have to go down to bare metal or can these products be used over existing paint? Thanks!

Evercoat Chrome-A-Lite is a good middle of the road filler. The better stuff is Evercoat Rage but it is over $50 a gallon.
The rage can be used over paint/epoxy if it is sanded with at least 80 grit. I have never had any bleed through or soaking caused by the filler. In any situation make sure it is featherd and finsished with 180 or finer before primer. I never really had good luck with the Bondo brand stuff. |

anything from Evercoat is a great product. More expensive ones just spread easier/smoother and sand little easier. A good trick is to mix a bit of glazing putty in your body filler and it'll spread out better and sand easier.

By "sand with at least 80 grit", do you mean 80 and grittier like 40, or 80 and smoother, like 120?

I've never heard that before. Why do you say that? |

Love that stuff. My only gripe is that any silky smooth bondo that's not evercoat takes a little longer to lose the tackiness but that's ok as long as you're patient enough to wait a little longer. Seems like that's the main difference between your rages/ extremes and Marson Platinum. I take that stuff over Evercoat any day due to price. I also tried Matrix platinum(or gold?) and it sanded really well. It's green. Sanded so nice I thought there's no way this stuff can take any impacts. |

any filler can be applied to epoxy that is within the 7 day window . if past the adhesion window scuff with 80 grit.
and leave the 36 grit paper for the car lot hack jobs. |

never, ever heard of that. In fact it doesn't even say it on my can of fiberglass filler. What shine said. |

What kind do you use?
I use Evercoat Everglass and it says to remove paint with a 36-80 grit disk prior to application. Not sure how you have been taught but I have been in the auto body industry for 15 years and never seen anyone apply fiberglass filler over paint or epoxy primer. |

any filler made can be applied to epoxy. it is the preferred way of doing it. yes you need to remove paint before using any filler but the method of filler over bare steel went out years ago.
epoxy gives better corrosion protection and adhesion. |
