body straightness

Today when I jacked up my Capri, instead of puting the jackstands under the suspension arms I put them under the engine crossmember. But for some reason when I lowered the jack. one of the jackstands wasn't touching the crossmember.... Could It be body alignment problem? I've used that jackstants hundreds of times before on other cars and I'm completely sure that they have no diference in height. The only things that could causing are, my garage floor isn't striahgt on that place, the crossmemeber isn't straight or the body isnt' straight. Whats your opinion? I was in a hury when this happened, so I hadn't time to check it well. The red squares in the pictures are the places where I put the jackstands. This picture it's an older one from the begining of the resto.

Wouldn't want to blame the car until I had a chance to insure the concrete slab is true.

I always like to consider the worst scenario. But if the problem really is with the car it would be a really big problem!

You didn't say how big the difference is. Less than an inch and I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if the car tracked and rode fine B4 your work.

I've yet to see a truly flat garage floor. Try using some different frame points and see what that tell's ya.

Yes, it's less than an inch. Maybe something like 3/4 ou or something like that.
I only drove the car a very few times, and alaways at a very low speed. When I bought it I brought it home in trayier because at the time the car documents and insurance weren't in order, and I was affraid of beeing stoped by the cops. So I prefered to not risque a ticket...
I only drove the car twice before I removed the engine, but it rode well.

Unless the car was in a bad enough wreck, I would sooner believe its an issue with the garage floor or maybe even the jackstands themselves. Measure them and find out.

I wouldn't be worried about it. The Capri's were rock solid as long as they aren't ravaged by rust. The whole body including the front fenders is welded together extensively. It would take a lot to tweak one I would think.

Has it been in a wreck? Does it show signs of one of the fenders having been replaced? Perhaps one of the fenders was removed and welded back on with the chassis not sitting perfectly level.

I've had 5 Capri's and I'm fairly certain I have ran across this a time or two but didn't give it much thought. Haven't had any odd handling problems.

Hey Frank, its good to ear an opinion from someone who owned various Capri's. If you say that it's normal. I think that I souldn't be worried about it, toninght I will try to check it well. Thank you for your help, that problem wasn't letting me sleep...

After lunch I had a little time to take a look at the car, I jacked it up and when I was jacking it up I noticed that one wheel left the floor about 1/2 inch before the other.... I tried to put the jack stands on the ...(I dont really know the name of that part of the body in english), it's the part that holds the crossmember, instead of putting them under the crossmemeber.And the car sitted well at the jackstands on that point... Maybe it has something to do with the car being without engine....
