Post Bodylines & filler

Well this is my first time posting, and after searching around on here a lot, I've noticed that there are more than a few people who know their bodywork. Here's my q:

I've got an '86 Astro van which I've been shaving out for a long time now. I'm in the process of applying filler to the door handles, and the problem I'm running into is the bodyline. It sunk in a bit when the handle was welded up, and it's not coming back out. I can apply filler all day long but it just doesn't seem like its coming out, so I've stripped it back down to bare to try again. Any tips? I've heard something about using tape, but I can't find that tip anymore. Thanks again.

From Knowledge Base, exsterior, articles, how to do basic bodywork. [quote] Using Filler, technique #2: If applying filler to a surface where a bodyline is present there are a few tricks to doing it but the easiest is as follows:

You need a roll of scotch tape (I use 3M, but any will do). Tape down a 2" long part of the tip of the tape to the center of the bodyline and stretch the tape at least 6" from the other side of the affected area, this will be used as a guide or template to where the bodyline once was.

DO NOT continually press down the tape as you work your way to the other side of the affected area, this will void the whole purpose. You may smooth tape after you attach 2" of the tape to the other side, securing it to the center of the bodyline, then smoothing it. Apply filler to the side of the tape which is centered in the bodyline, wait till jelly-like and peel off tape, this will put a "lip" on the filler where the line used to be. Apply filler 5" below the "lip", this will give you a straight smooth line. Let harden until firm to the touch, but not completely hard. See Working with Filler, technique #2.

Basic Bodywork.

Ok well see I saw that, but I'm still kinda lost. My bodyline forms an almost goes from straight to a 45 for about a 1/2 inch, then goes straight again. Do I duplicate the tape process for each part of that?

Basically, yes. Filler work and smoothing is one of the things that makes a good body person. Be patient, take your time work with the propper tools like sanding blocks and etc and it will turn out fine. If you can take some pictures of the part your having trouble with I can help a bit better.
