Bodyshop Seem Dead-set on Using Etch Primer
I went to see the guys at the bodyshop today to see how the work on my car is progressing
I've got to say, these guys are some kind of wizards!!
Seriously talented wizards!!
I'm so happy with the work they're doing....and I'm so thankful that people on here talked me out of doing this one myself
Now, as happy as I am, we've hit our first stumbling block this morning
Whilst talking me through what they're doing next they mentioned they were going to etch prime the car
I told them I didn't want it etch priming and that I'd prefer it to be epoxy primed
(My decision is based purely on this forum, my knowledge if paints is very limited to say the least)
I asked them why they wanted to use etch instead of epoxy, and whilst they did give me an answer, my limited knowledge has meant I've forgotten what they told me earlier
They mentioned something about paint being pourus, and that if any water is aloud to become trapped it can cause micro blisters
I think they said the etch primer allows the paint to breathe
(I don't know if I misenturpereted this though)
We also spoke about anti stone-chip paint. They said they would etch the underside of the car, then apply the stone-chip, followed by two costs of high-build primer and two or three coats of single stage paint
Whilst I hate the look of stone-chip paint, I understands it's benefits
So, what I'd like to know is.....
Are their reasons to use etch sensible ones, or should I tell them to use epoxy
And what can I ask them to do about the stone-chip appearance?
ie: Can it be flattened down?
To tell you the truth before I started using the epoxy over the bare steel, I have used the etch primer on quite a few cars. Now I can see the benifits of using the epoxy versus the etch. But does that now mean I will have to restrip and repaint all those cars I did not use epoxy on..............no not by a long shot. The etch will work as a lot of guys still do it that way. The cars I have used it on myself still look fine and do not have any issues with, and this is years (some as much as ten) later. I just started a new project that was in primer when it came in, the problem is when it left the last bodyshop, 7 or 8 years ago it has developed a lot of rust coming through the primer. So it must be all taken down and started fresh as I WILL not go over all that rust. And stripping this car some of it was etch primed and some just a 2K. And even with a good paint stripper the etch primer is very hard to get off.
