Bolting slicks

We are running a mild bracket car with 29 by 10 slicks mounted to 10 inch rims the tires have tubes in them. I marked the and one is showing monement of about 1 inch after 4 runs. They guys at the track are giving me two different opinions on how to correct the problem 1 is to use 3/4 inch long self tapping sheet metal screws the other is to remove the tubes and run without screws. Which way would be better?

Don't use sheet metal screws. Use rim screws, sold by Jegs?Summit, ets, Usually Moroso. There are rules by NHRA/IHRA about the grade of screws that can be used.

While there are certain areas of the car where bolt grades are spelled out in the rules, rim screws are not one of them. Matter of fact, they are not mentioned at all in the 2007 NHRA Rulebook.

I do agree with you, however, that dedicated Grade 8 screws such as those offered by Moroso are a far better choice for the task than cheap hardware screws.

drill the holes in the rim and use the screw to tap into the bead of the rim.

Make sure and champher the holes in the rim to prevent cutting the bead.

using tubes with slicks was once mandatory.
