Borg Warner T-10 ID - Ford

I have a T-10 with the following info on it-
In yellow paint C3DA A

It was going to be put into a 65 Mustang 289 but would not fit - the bolt pattern to the bell was smaller and the input shaft was longer than the one that came out of the car. A friend said that the C3 was 1963 and the D usually meant a Falcon but he is unable to research it further, his 'slides' don't go back that far. He did say that it is not for a 6 cylinder as they were only available in 3 speed manual. Another person said that it might be AMC but my first friend said that the C3DA A was a Ford ID number. Can anyone help me shed some light on this unit?

Count the number of splines on the output shaft and cross reference it to what manufacturer made it. I think the early BW T10s in SB Fords had a 23 spline count and the later 65 or 66 and up had a 28 spline output shaft. The intermediate models like the Fairlanes had the shifter mounted in the center of the tail shaft housing. The smaller compacts like the Falcons had the shifter mounted on the end of the housing. The full sized cars like Galaxies, had the shifter mounted more towards the front of the tail shaft housing.
