brake booster dilemma

I searched the archives, but didn't find anything on this one:

I'm getting an 1980 Dodge pick-up ready for restoration. I've stripped a bunch of parts off an 1986 Dodge to use on the '80.

The brake booster on the '80 (left) is large circumference but narrow profile, and the booster on the '86 (right) is the opposite. Is one of these booster models superior to the other? I don't know if this is a case of newer is better or if a booster is a booster is a booster.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I would use the newer one in aluminum.

No, a booster is not a booster, there are difference's. Go take a visit to the Master Power Brakes website, they have a lot of information on brakes.

Thanks for the reply. I visited that web site and it had a lot of information as you said.

I have been doing some more research and have found that there are two types of Mopar big blocks: the RB type (= raised block; anything bigger than a 400) and the B type (400 and under).

Installing a RB block would require the smaller diameter brake booster to accommodate the valve covers. I'll put in the newer booster, but with gas prices as they are, I don't think I'll be shopping for a RB block anytime soon.

Paul (slowly mutating into mopar compatible )
