I have a narrowed 9" ford in my hot rod. It has 11" x 2 1/4" brakes with 4 1/2" bolt circle. The axle hole is 2 7/8". I can't find a drum to fit it. Standard big car is smaller center. Am I stuck with getting the centers machined to fit?

Probably. Or find some truck or econoline drums that fit the center hole and re-drill the stud holes in them.

No.
Go to your favorite parts store and find the guy with a few grey hairs.

Explain your situation and ask him to find you a Brake Rotor & Drum Specification guide.

I tried to research this a bit from home myself. The only application that I stumbled upon was 1969 Mustang 11 x 2.25, 5 on 4.5, with a pilot hole dia of 2.780

NAPA nor Raybestos lists a drum with these dimensions, but FordRacing does.
M-1126-B

These are also available on Drivewire.com considerably cheaper.

The corresponding backing plate and shoes are M-2209-B

What *really* bugs me is knowing that the shoes are VERY common on the late 70's full-sized cars (i.e 78 T-bird) that also use that bolt pattern. (Those same shoes were used on 1/2 tons as well, but the bolt circle was bigger.) I can tell you that the Wagner part number to fit that particular car is a BD60378. Unfortunately, I have not been able to determine the pilot hole diameter. :(

However, I do believe that the aforementioned specification guide should contain that information.

Hmmm ... another thought. The early (pre-1978) Bronco's also used a "car" bolt pattern and some had the 9" diff as well, IIRC???
