Sounds like you need to adjust the switch, or the switch actuator. Lights on all the time was that the original problem?

Does it happen only when the girl drives the care? Tell her to quit ridding the brakes....

If it's not the switch I think you'll have to use a code reader. Took a look at the wiring diagram for this car. Way out of my league. It ain't simple.

Pepi is on the correct track, If the lights stays on it's got to be switch related ...... or you have a shorted wire somewhere that's supplying pwr to the lights. Unhook the switch and see if they go off if they do, your switch wasn't adjusted far enough away from the stop.

Which light is on? the one on the back of the car, or the red brake warning light on the dash. Not quite understanding your post here

Sounds like a BCM problem. I dont have a wiring diagram in front of me but I look around.
Brake lights should work with or without key on as they are wire to an allways hot source, however this may be in series with the BCM (body control module) due to the fact that an antitheft system is an option.
The fact that the key turns them on or off makes me think the problem lies in the BCM. I will look around and get back to you.

I checked around. there was some chatter about the connector at the bcm.Seems it get a little corrosion in one of them.
You could try unplugging it and plugging it back in a few times to see if the symptoms improve dissapear or change. That would be a good inicator as to the bcm being the issue.
One other thing may be that the bcm needs to be reprogrammed to the brake pedal posisition sensor ( what you think is a brake light switch)
The bcm will be inside the center console or behind the center of the dash and will be closer to the passenger side.It should have 4 colored connectors on it. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in, a few times on each connector. Try that , if it doesnt clear up the problem , then a tech II scanner is necessary, or a modis with late software.
You would think being a chevy and just being a brake light problem that it should be simple, not so. Guys buy chevys cause they say " I can work on chevrolets" that is no longer true.Sadly enough, but true,

We have actually ran into a few cars that the brake lights dont work with the key off. We do state safety inspections. I dont remember what the cars were.

The OP's issue could also be a turn signal switch issue.
It may be worth disconnecting the battery for a minute and re-connect it.

I ran into a couple in the past also. It was allways thought that the brake lights should work with the key off in case of an engine malfunction that necessitated turning off the key and coasting to a stop. That way at least other motorists would still see you are stopping regardless if the key was on or the engine was running.
I did see on Identifix that there has been issues with the connector at the bcm causing brake light issues, as they do run the lights through the bcm. This is standard It would seem, it makes it able to just program the BCM when the assembly line installs the factory anti theft system as it is in the bcm and the bcm needs to control lighting in the event of an attemped theft.
I dont think the brake signal goes through the turn switch anymore as it too feeds the bcm , If I had the EWD in front of me a lot of questions could be answered, but I think I nailed it down here.
