I have a 71 nova.It came with a 307 auto.I am refittting it with a 454, and a 5 speed trans.Can I keep the drum brakes?They are power assist,and all new parts will be used.Thank You

Brake size requirements are based on vehicle weight. If it stops ok now it will be the same with the new engine. That Big Block is about 200LBS heavier than the Small Block which should have no impact on how the brakes work. Of course a disk upgrade will make a big difference on how the car stops. Drum brakes are susceptible to brake fade and water
if you drive it in the rain.

I would at least upgrade to factory disc brakes. There are plenty of donor cars out there to get the required disc brake spindels from and you can buy new calipers and power booster/master cylinder. No way would I stick with drums.
