brand new

Hey y'all.
I'm new to the site, and relatively new to hot rodding. I recently picked up my first rod, a 1961 chevy bel air. She's a bubbletop sport coupe with a tired old straight 6 and a 'glide. I'm stripping her down in the garage as we speak, and currently debating what size motor to put in her. (keep the six? go for the easy 350? hook up a cla$$ic 409? go huge with a 502 crate?) oooohh the possibilities are endless!

Here she is in the woods, her home for 10 years before i picked her up

On the trailer headed home

i'll keep ya updated. I'm pulling the 6 tomorrow

Welcome.. I'm new to the site too, but lovin' it! A lot of true mechanical minds here.
My first car was a 61 impala, so I have a soft spot for them. A 409 would be my thoughts. Whatever you do, I'm sure will turn it into a great rod.Good luck....CR

Use a "W" motor!

You sure chose a cool car to fix up. In high school I had a friend who had a '61 Impala bubble top coupe and it was a rare SS model (Super Sport) with bucket seats, etc. and of course a 348 tri-power engine and BW 4-speed. Man, did we ever have fun in that car! The 348 "W" engine of '61 was rated at 350 hp with the triple carbs. It had solid lifers and high compression. A single 4-barrel 409 was also available late '61 and it used the 348 heads. These engines are very distinctive looking and are real eye candy. Edelbrock now makes beautiful aluminum heads and modern intake manifolds and they are far better than original equipment and lighter too. I have owned several '60 Chevies with the bad 348 engines and one with a dual quad 409 (a Biscayne 2-dr sedan) and Muncie 4-speed. I also had one with an L88 427 and 400 turbo. I had a beautiful '64 Impala SS with 425 hp 409 that I bought new. I regret selling those cars now. Any engine you put in that Belaire will be good. You will, however, be amazed at the attention it will get if you put in a 348 or 409. Good luck with the old girl.
