breather oil separator

I just brought back my mower from the shop and they said I had a vacuum leak and replaced the hose. Now Im curious as to what the purpose of it was and why it caused the sputtering and smoking of the engine. The kohler engine manual labels the part as the breather oil separator. It is a small canister that sits on top of the valve cover with a vac hose that exits right in front of the carburetor. This thing is a mystery to me and I had to figure out what it does for the engine. Which way does the air even flow? Thanks, BF

It sounds like a crude PCV valve/system. Blowby is pushed into the seperator and the raw oil goes back into the engine and the fumes make their way into the inlet stream of the intake air. My Briggs has a similar setup too, except there is no seperator.
