A brief walk thru on making of "Hearse with a Curse"
Sorry but being a teacher or heaven forbid an instructor is not a strong point of mine... But I thought I would like to share how I created "Hearse with a Curse"...
In order to get the perspective and vanishing point correct I did a basic mockup in 3D using Wings3D... A free but very capable 3D modeler... http://www.wings3d.com/ If my image has an one point vanishing point, I'll start from a digital sketch but most often if the perspective is complex I'll do a 3D mockup using simple primitives in Wings3D or Hexagon....

Now I lay done the base color of the car and start adding details in ArtRage....
ArtRage is a very enjoyable and relaxing experience with the best user interface of any 2D app and possible any graphic app including 3D tools I own & use.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next I open a new document in ArtRage and using the digital pencil I sketch a head for Big Frank.... ![]() Now I add a base color and then add some detail... I'm mostly using the oil brush & felt pen in ArtRage.... ![]()

Now I merge Big Frank's head into the hot rod image, give him arms, a skull gear shift, steering wheel and a ghost passenger. I also create a tombstone...
Next I add a layer below the car & Big Frank layers and add a background.... I also add a few more details to the hot rod... ![]() ![]() In a new document in ArtRage I create a bat... Not a very good bat but none the less, a bat... The bat is duplicated numerous times & scaled and skewed.... I also paint a tree in ArtRage and add some textures from some free sites at a very low opacity... ![]() Not enlightening but may give some of you an idea of how I work... Any comments on how I could improve my art or work flow would be most welcomed... Cheers Ken |

Awesome tutorial Kenmo, some of the guys have asked trhe question "how dod you do it" here often. Most of us have the Photoshop or other high paid programs that just aren't pocket friendly for some.
It's nice to see you can create with Free or smaller apps almost what can be done in PS or AI. I've been looking for a good line tool program myself, just can't grasp the one in PS or AI. Thanks a bunch, it's uses can be duplicated in all of imaging needs. |

Thanks for the kind words... I've used Inkscape which is a free vector type app... You can download a Linux or Windows version here....
http://inkscape.org/ Also check out heathenx for tutorials on Inkscape... http://screencasters.heathenx.org/ I used Inkscape and Artrage to create my image The Bomb. I also use Corel Paint Shop Pro to adjust color and re-size the image... I find ArtRage is a fantastic painting app but it's transformation tools are lacking... I love ArtRage so much I seldom use Corel Painter IX.5 any more.... Cheers Ken |

I did try both of them but was having computer issues at that time, and couldn't make god use of them. I have a new comp and it will be shipping on the 11th so anything in this machine should be much more stable, it's about as top of the line as I could afford, now I have to upgrade my adobe to all CS5. I am well versed in PS but not illustrator which is my shortfall.
All in all it looks like the right program at the right price for the nominal "unpaid version" I should get Corel for the heck of it also, I can open alot of files that PS won't |

Another great apps is ArtWeaver. It's like Corel Painter. There's a commercial version and a free version. I've used the free version and it is very capable. The pro has a few more features like the ability to run Photoshop plug ins...
Artweaver link here... http://www.artweaver.de/ Cheers Ken |
