Briggs and Stratton performance?

What can I do to an old B&S 5 horsepower horizontal shaft engine to increase power?
It hasnt been used in YEARS, but i took it off the mower today and am taking it apart to rebuild it. Any ideas?

There is a great deal of performance parts for it, go to Jegs or Summit catalogs.

Muffler, ditch it. Air cleaner, ditch it. Governor plate, ditch it. Go to your local airport and get a gallon of Helicopter fuel. It has a purplish tint to it. You WILL mess your pants. Good Luck.

1) Take the muffler off
2) change airfilter
3) elimiante governor (maybe not...could blow your engine)
4) take the whole engine apart and take the piston and let it have shaved down (the top) by a machinist
5) replace the head gasket with a thinner one
6) mix alcohol or methane fuel into the regular fuel

that's about it.

You will get the biggest boost from shaving the head, a small dirtbike carb (50cc-80cc) works wonder too. Those Briggs carbs are junk at any speed other than WOT. RPM is your enemy, the rods are die cast so they can't take much.

OK so dirtbike carb, either ditch the exhaust or build something custom (come on, dont wanna have the neighbors complaning, LOL), if at all possible replace the rods with something stronger, shave the head, helecoptor fuel( HAHAHA)

Would 20% Nitromethane work? (From a nitro RC truck)

Anything worth porting?
Shave some weight off the piston/connecting rod?

get a wild cam for it. I know you can get them all the Jr dragsters are running them. those things get going faster than 80 MPH in the 1/8 mile. or you could ditch the 5 hp and get a 15 to 20 hp. i built a go cart that had a 5 hp B&S it was disappointing till i go my 8 hp B&S massive difference i disconnected the govner so i could rev the hell out of it. Im currently building a 15 hp go cart with a 4 speed tranny.

Sounds like a cool project man! You can go to a hobby shop and get airplane fuel, its way up there in nitro content!

The best way to fix it is, trash it, and go get a new Tecumseh.
They have better carbs, rev up better, and are flat out faster than Briggs.

I whooped many 5 HP Briggs powered go karts with my old 2 HP Tecumseh.
They had me a few feet, up until their governor kicked in, and off I went.

Why would you want a tecumseh they're junk. I've been working on lawnmowers for the past 5 years so that i can earn money for my car and tecumseh carbs suck the are extremely touchy and the engine are just crap. Stay with Briggs, FastChevy must be one of them people that just like to keep on spending money on carb kits and stuff like that

Around this neck of the woods Kohler engines rule on the tracks.

My boss and his kids run them and Onans in their pulling tractors.
