Post Broken piston rings

Here is one that is new to me. I took my Chevy 235 apart getting ready to take it to the machine shop fro a rebuild. When I took out the pistons, every top compression ring was broken! The other comp. rings and the oil rings were perfect. There was no ridge at all in the cylinders and the rings had been broken for a long time because there was a buildup of carbon on the sealing surfaces. Ring lands all look nice and tight.

If you look in the dictionary under 'stock engine' they have a picture of my engine. From the8:1 compression, to the cast iron YF carb, to the grocery getter cam, to the 3 on the tree, it was stock. It had a broken odometer when I got it in '95 and I put another 75,000mi on it since. Always ran great but was using 1qt of oil/month at the end.

Any ideas why the rings all broke?

Detonation, tapered bores, shock cooling caused by liquid fuel percolating into the engine, crankcase fuel explosion, excessive piston clearance, excessive ring land clearance, butted gaps, over-revving (flutter) and a few other factors can cause it.

A set of moly coated steel rings will never fail in this way, chrome too. Cast iron seems to fail after a number of years from fatigue. I wouldn't worry about it just replace them.

BTW the newer nodular cast iron rings are a lot more forgiving than the old cast type.

Thanx. Yes, I am going clear thru the engine, milling the head 100/1000ths to go to 9.5:1 compression, Complete Clifford cam kit (260deg w/ Crane variable lifters), Fenton cast iron headers, Offy aluminum valve and lifter covers, Clifford water heated 4bbl manifold, chrome rings, full flow oil filter conversion. Don't expect a repeat of the ring breaks. I just had never seen all of them in an engine broken!
