Broken springs while engine is in storage

I was freshening up my engine a few weeks back and was in the fence whether I should do springs or not and found two broken ones. Last time I ran this engine was three seasons ago. It ran very well in a 150 lap race, no issues at all and made real good power.

Question is did this happen on my engine stand? Never heard of the letting go on the stand but I'm sure that's what happened here. Engine guy went through it completely since then and he says no valves touched pistons or anything. Real glad I pulled a valve cover instead of just firing it the way it was... Which was the plan

I've never seen it happen to a static engine, but stranger things have happened I suppose. It would be necessary for the broken springs to have been compressed (valves held open, in other words) during storage, so to start with I'd want to know if the broken springs were compressed or not.

They've been changed out now just seemed weird that they were broken on the stand.
