Im smart enough to figure that out. My problem is that the answer to that question is nothing...... nothing doesn't work. everything seems fine(except for a loss of power and bad gas milage). and i looked everywhere under the car and i cant figure out where this plug should go.

I can double check the wire colors but I need to know what year motor and trans are in it. The wire colors change from year to year and auto to 5 speed.

Do the lights come on when you put it into 4 wheel drive? if so it might be for the seat belt warning buzzer. The wires run under the cab and into the floor behind the drivers seat. And the cruise control wires plug into the t-case at the speedo cable. The back up light wires go ontop of the trans near the shifter also. And the neutral safty switch is kinda hidden as well.

the lights do come on in 4 wheel drive. The motor and tranny are both 1987 stock. It is an automatic though. After you said that though ... I wonder if its a sensor for manual trannys. I'm going to double check my reverse lights but i think they work.

it wasnt the revers lights...the connection for the seat belt is hooked in and the nuetral saftey works fine. It has to be for the manual tranny

Likely it's a wire for something that was never installed in your truck, the factory puts full harnesses in even if the truck doesn't have all the accessories. Have you tried a voltmeter to see if it is getting power?

I checked that also. It is an 87 xlt with every option that was available. Right down to the inflate seats, cruise control, 4x4, power windows and locks
