I agree on how much power they have. All the big BOP motors pull like freight trains. I think with the right gears and a "plymouth superbird"-like aero treatment it'd hit 150 easy.

I think he fed you a line. Plugging in a maximum rpm of 5000, 3.08 final drive ratio and lets say 26" tires, you'd be hard pressed to break 130 miles per hour according to this potential speed calculator and I still have a hard time believing that a 1965 anything could hit that speed anywhere other than very briefly at a dragstrip without some serious aerodynamic improvements.

Don't feel bad, I had a guy in a Supra point at his AC compressor and tell me it was a turbo. We're talking about a car that popularized by Vin Diesel and Hulk Hogan, kinda scraping the bottom of the bucket

Some 'generic' engine weights from various sources:

Stude 289- 650#
Buick 430/455- 600#
BBC- 685#
SBC- 575#

Aero drag really eats into the power needed to run fast. Doubling speed takes 4 x the hp, all else being equal. Not to mention if there's insufficient downforce the car can become airborne.

Theres no doubt a modded 430 can take a car to 150. I recently built a 430 out of a 67 Riviera GS to put in my 72 Riviera. The 67's came with big port heads and once you port them further, the engine REALLY comes alive.
My current combo includes goodies like full length headers with 2" primaries, a single plane intake with a Holley 850DP, big Mutha Thumpr cam and a Th400 with a 2500 stall.
I can quickly bury my speedo past the 125 mark and with my 3.42 gears and 28" tall tires I've only taken it up to 5500 rpms in third gear which equates to about 130ish with another 500rpm to go in the usable power band.
So 150 in a better geared, lighter Skylark, is easily attainable.

I suppose you're going to have to excuse my crude image editing skills, but I believe a picture says a thousand words. Until someone shows me otherwise, I'm convinced that the posters skylark would have to bear an uncanny resemblance to my fantasy buick below to crack 150mph. It would also explain why he has any business racing Supras.

Aero, undoubtedly, plays a major factor in higher speeds. However, with enough power and a long enough stretch of road, 150mph is not all that unattainable. That being said, safety wise, he probably does not have the equipment to do so without taking a much higher risk than he is at those speeds.
I'm fairly certain I could easily run my Rivi to my self imposed redline of 6200 and reach 147mph, however, I know better than to do so on my S rated tires and 35 year old suspension. All I know is my car feels extremely stable at 130+ and its still pulling like a frieght train. I'm sure the weight and size of the car have something to do with that but I cnt imagine my aero is that much better than a Skylarks.

I love it!

I have to tell you, the thought of going 150 in a Skylark (I have a 65 Gran Sport remember) is absolutely frightening! Not without a LOT of safety equipment, cage, harnesses, etc. And an upgrade on suspension and tires. Like I said 125+ in my buddies Duster comes back to me like a movie scene in my head and it was NOT a fun ride, and I was a stupid teenager with no understanding of life. Now at 54, holy crap does that thought give me chills.

Brian

I used to ride shotgun w/my Florida State Trooper brother in law. This was back in the era when 440 Fury III's ruled the roads. I have seen 135 mph on a certified speedo more than once- that's all the 440'd do in that application. Not the most aero platform, I'm sure all will agree.

A '09 cop car Charger w/the "Hemi" ran 146, the computer imposed limit. Unfettered by the computer, it ran 160-plus.
Michigan State Police 2010 police pursuit car tests: Dodge Charger, Ford, and Chevy

2013 testing has the Caprice 6.0L at 154, just ahead of the Hemi Charger.

Hahah, I'm glad I got at least one laugh. I'm not proud to admit that I've reached similar speeds in a car that was slightly more modern than that (a fox body) and it was not a pleasant ride either. I'm sure that with today's vehicles it's quite possible, but I really think that once you start crossing 120 mph, you've put your life in the hands of the vehicles aerodynamics.
