Buick 430?

A friend of mine just bought a large shed full of late 60's thru mid-70's Chevy engines with a few oddballs mixed in. One of those is a complete '67-'69 Buick 430. It has all the brackets, accessories and exhaust manifolds. The only things missing are the air cleaner and carb. I can literally get it for pocket change. Lately I have had the urge for something with some "guts" that the 289 in my Stude just can't deliver and I have some wild recollections of my buddy's 455 Stage 1. My memories of it may be slightly enhanced by time but even so it was still a runner. I can't bring myself to put a SBC in it even though I'm tripping over them in my garage. I don't need a beast like the Stage 1 but a near stock rebuild with a 200-4R and some 3.55 gears should put the Stude in the same category as my old '67 GTO which ran in the the 13.90's easy and was still very mild mannered in normal driving. My recollections of the late 60's B-O-P's were that with a tall gear even the larger engines in the large sedans were capable of at least livable mileage and that was on bias ply tires.

What do you think, too weird or a viable option?

The 430 is a tough engine, but it was never ment to be a high horsepower engine.. I know they put them in a lot of the bigger cars but the only 1 that comes to mind is the Electra..

if you want to ditch the Stude engine.. go with an AMC V8 engine.. might be able to get a 343 or a 360 who knows.. lots of Wagoneers had AMC 360's

They found their way into most full size Buicks and the Riviera. Factory rating was 360 HP / 475 LbFt @ 3200. No not a high "horsepower" engine by any means but they were torque monsters and I LOVE torque! Couple that with a 3200 Lb. car and a 200-4R and I think I could be satisfied. My GTO was 335 HP / 430 LbFt at 3400 and a few hundred Lbs. heavier and it was a fun car to drive. I do not plan to spin it over 5,000 RPM. Regardless of the validity of the factory ratings both were rated using the same criteria so I'm pretty much comparing apples to apples when using my GTO as a benchmark. If I can get it to run like that I'll be a happy little camper.

I will vote for the swap. The 430 has a lot of torque like you say, minimally more weight than a SBC, and way different. Plus 360 hp is no slouch.

From what I have read the Stude V8 weighs about the same as a BBC so there's another one in the Buick's favor.

Hell yeah get the Buick motor! It will already have good flowing heads (should be identical casting to the 455) with the bonus of high compression. If it is out of a 69-70 Electra (70 was a half year 430/455) it should be closer to 500lb-ft output at a very low stump pulling 2200-2500rpm. I remember as a kid my dad's Electra with the 430 could merge into traffic no problem.

Rebuild the factory quadrajet, get an intake and a cam for it to really wake it up.


If you can get a BOP pattern 700R4 or 200R4 and some 4.11 gears your stude will SCOOT! Plus big block buicks have a nasty deep idle. I think that would be much nicer than some generic SBC.



Does he happen to have any more 430's laying around? My brother has a '68 LeSabre that could use an upgrade from the Buick 350



Edit: Yes the BBB does not weigh but a 150lbs or so more than a SBC. Change the intake to an aluminum, get some headers to replace the lousy stock manifolds and the difference is minimal. I can also remember we could go to Toledo and back (400+ miles) on ONE tank of gas in the Electra.

No more 430's, sorry. Got the 200-4R already, gonna run 3.42 or 3.55 gears, my GTO with a TH400 and 3.55's out pulled many a similar car with 3.73 to 4.11 gears. A few stick cars took me off the line but by the time I hit 2nd I was pulling away. The 200-4R has a lower 1st gear and the Stude is 4 or 500 Lbs. lighter so it should pull pretty hard as it is. With the 3.55's in OD I'd be cruisin' about 1900 at 65 MPH. The stock QuadraJet is long gone but it will get another one for sure. I'll try to find a vintage Edelbrock intake for it and a modern torque cam. I'll have to wait until I can lower it into the engine compartment before I make any decisions on exhaust, it shouldn't be any tighter than the Stude mill though, that thing is HUGE!

I'll be hanging onto the Stude motor though, ya never know what might come along..........

I may be wrong on the weight but I thought there was only 25-30lbs difference between the two. I had a 70 GS Stage 1 at one time and can attest to the fact that it will scoot with 3.55 gears.

I had an old Buick with a Buick 350. Dang thing would run with a buddy's 383 Camaro. Pulled a ton harder too. Lousy oil pressure, but it was a blast to mash the go pedal from 15 mph. Anything lower would cook the rubber...

I own a 65 skylark with a 430 ant turbo 400 trans and posi with some street gears.. this car will break 150 mph while also pulling 13's .. don't let anyone steer you away.. after building this car I purchased 2 more 430's just because.. good luck you will be happy.. oh yeah and you talk about torque, your passengers will hate you if that stude has no headrests...E.O.

I highly doubt a 65 skylark has the aerodynamics to achieve 150 miles per hour, let alone with those gear ratios I doubt it is mechanically capable of reaching those speeds. Did you really dig this post up from the dead to blow smoke?

Back on topic, I wonder if Hippie is still here, I'd like to hear what happened with this 430 of his.

You know that is a good question I think I'll start a thread on that, but will it get thrown in the dump because of street racing issues? I know that I was in a friends 340 Duster with the speedo PEGGED I mean past the 120 and pegged way past the 120 looking like if you compared the distance between the numbers it was a very clear 130. So I wonder, hmmmm. I think you are right that the combination of the two, 150 and 13,s is asking a lot though. But that 430 has a LOT of oats!
