Buick Grand National differential questions

iam building a grand national rear iam puting in 3.73 rears in what are some of the pros and cons of doing it my self some one told me the crush sleeve is a problem the shiming can stay the same just make sure i check the back lash is this true what do u guys recommend

Rear end setup is a specialized process. You cannot use the original shims in 90% of applications. Each ring and pinion is set up to the housing it's in.

I agree! I don't think you have the knowledge or experience to do the job successfully. That comment is based on your question only. Get someone who is experienced and who has the tools required to help you if you can.

I've built many hundreds of rear ends and only 2 times have the original shims been correct. You must know how to set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash. You must know how to read the contact pattern so that you will know what adjustments need to be made to the pinion depth and backlash. You must have a few special tools to do the job correctly. Pinion depth and backlash are set with shims and must be within +/- .001 inch.

I agree again! Differentials are fun to do but you need tools, knowledge and experience!
