SBC's run very well with small chamber (64cc) and 2.05 intake valves and 1.60 exhaust valves. The porting of the runners is more critical. My 302 SBC powered '55 chevy runs 10.62 at 134 mph with factory double hump iron heads. And that was in the 1970's. Compression (around 13:1) and at least a .600 lift cam will make your power in a small block more than a set of $2000 heads. And remember - Small blocks when correctly built will run best in the 5000 to 8500 rpm range.
