with a 400 get a good steel crank to start, 6" rods and a set of forged pistons to match, a hydraulic cam(w/ 1.5 rocker up to 600" lift no more than 245 deg of duration) with anti pump up lifters roller rockers with a set of heads complete with guide plates and all the trimmings, runners no smaller than 210 int" 75exh" an air gap makes a good mid range intake, use a good double roller timing chain with key ways for degreeing and if usuing a stock oil pan use a standard volume oil pump, dont go high volume with stock pan you can suck it dry.
