building a CBB 454 from scratch ...

Hi everybody!

Im thinking of replacing the 429 cui engine of my 1964 Cadillac
SDV with a more reliable and cheaper Chevy 454 ...

I think i need a big block because the car weigh 2700 kilo,
and that takes alot of torque to move that around ...

Im going to start with an empty block, or a short block,
and build a complete engine, with alu heads and a 4bbl carb
to start with ..
Later im thinking of a turbocharger and injection ...

Now i need all the help you can give me about selecting a block, heads,
induction and so on ...

Thanks in advance!

Honestly, i wouldnt put in a BBC, id go for a 500 caddy and a pair of garret TB04 at 6-8 pounds of boost, that will net you over 600 BHp and save over 100 pounds of weight, not to mention all your accessories will bolt right up. (allong with your transmission)

I am all for BBC (have 2, one in my impala and 1 in the roadster) but you are adding alot of problems by going with a chevy in a caddy instead of staying with the 429/500

well, alot of people says the same ....

unfortunatly there are a few problems;
#1: Caddy parts are expensive.
#2: Caddy parts are hard to find.
#3: Caddy parts that are better than stock is impossible to find.
#4: I dont want to buy a lot of parts that are impossible to sell.
Please note that i live in Sweden ...

If i lived in the states i would probably build a Cad. 500 cui,
that would be cool ...

But here in Sweden its hard to find a Cad. Eldorado 500 cui (or
any 500 cui btw) and they cost more then a complete 454 ....

the accessories is not a problem, i have no options at all ...
nothing thats connected to the engine anyway .... all i need is
a pump for the steering servo ...

dont get me wrong, a Cad 500 is a good idea, if i could buy the
parts somewhere near ....

please tell me more about the 454s

i dont know where in sweden you live, but check with USA bildelar Osby, tel: 0479 13500 they propably have a couple on hand, or try www.nitroz.se

a good 454 will cost you over 50.000 sek before you are done ordering parts, or 25.000 sek for a goos running engine.

and if you are going to run turbos anyway, stick with the 429 caddy. it has the potential for producing so much horsepower on boost that you will blow transmissions faster than you can say saab.

you can send me a PM and ill e-mail you with some specifics on addng a turbo to your setup.

id think that a turbo from a volvo or scania truck would cost 1500-2500 Sek and the rest is just your own time and ingenuity, byt it can be done fur under 6000 Sek for complete turbo setup and the Hp is just a matter of adjustng boost and changing jets in the carb (if you tave the electronic controlled carb, you can add a megasquirt EFI for arround 4000 Sek including injectors and fuelpump)

well, ive mailed Osby, but they had no Cad 500 ...

the problem is that Cad 429 cui are known for making big ugly
holes in pistons .... and they cost 1000 sek (130$) per piece.
i have compression ratio 10.5, and i guess thats to much
to add any pressure at all ....

besides, i want to build a an engine .. havent rebuilt a V8 yet ..
just a few Volvo B20 ...

i did some calculating, and i suppose id have to spend about
60.000 SEK (8000$) on the engine.
at the end i will think that its worth it ..
