Switching on and off, as Holder correctly points out, has nothing to do with burning your eyes and even if the helmet fails to go dark you will still not burn your eyes! As far as trying to weld without a welding helmet I just can't believe someone would attempt to do such a thing so for this post and the other you have about welding exhaust I strongly suggest you get some training, until you learn the basics there is probably little we can do to help here.

You can't teach common sense. If you damage your eyes they don't repair themselves, they just get worse and treatment is very expensive. I can't imagin any reason not to use eye protection. Welding helmets can be a pain in tight quarters. Possible planning ahead so the welding can be done before it is very difficult would help.

Weld burn is not fun and not at all necessary. Good thing you aren't in my shop or you would be on vacation...unpaid

That's a spam post Randy..

But to bring up a good topic. I watched the 1st Back From The dead production where Ian Roussel built a rat rod.. Not really a good production and more than once during the production, Ian just closed his eyes during the weld.. Teaching the kids that may be watching it that it is 'cool' to do that, and I know a kid who use to do that because he thought it was cool.

The second movie, of him doing a '54 Chevy is actually pretty good for entertainment

Matt.. I know what sallyliao is up to... Don't worry.. The dump truck will be coming soon..

I do most of my tacking without my shield... You will get a flash faster from the side then dead on... Almost every time I ever got a flash, Was because of the people that would be welding on side of me...

If you have an emergency room you can go to have them put some ophthalmic tetracaine..That will get the sand out.
Other than that there ain't much you can do...

Isn't that the truth.

Worse burn I ever got, guy working on the same table TIG welding some stainless(GTAW for the youngsters). Both eyes taped and wrapped for 3 days. The eye doc put an ointment in them and gave me some pain pills. If you care for your eye sight go straight to an Eye doctor for all eye burns. All those home remedies do not work.

I used to tack weld with dark glasses and sunscreen on my face, but I feel such things are foolish with the auto darkening lenses so readily available.
