Busy couple of days.......

With gas prices getting near $3.00 per gallon we finally decided the time was right to trade in our Dodge Ram 4x4 hemi for something a bit more fuel efficient. However we still needed a pickup to haul stuff to the dump (the house isn't quite finished yet), to haul stuff back from the local wrecking yard, and to tow around the car trailer occasionally.

So...... Meet "JD". JD by the way is short for Junkyard Dog. A 76 Ford F-250 4x4. Just what the doctor ordered. Ugly, dented, rough paint, a gazillion miles, and powered by a 390 with a 4 speed (stump pulling 1st gear) but most importantly it will get the job done.

Now all I need is a few cans of spray paint and it will have a new camouflaged paint job.

So, out with the 4x4 Hemi Ram and in with the Blue Oval. My question: How much money to boot did you have to pony up on the trade?

Just funnin'! I'll take a beat up old stump puller any day of the week.

You mean to tell me that a new HEMI gets worse mileage than an old Ford 4x4 with a big block?

And you say HEMIs are great..........................

That is one trade up the advertising boys at dodge won't want to hear about.

Insurance is going to be cheaper too!!

Actually the hemi's mileage was better than the 390 in that old Ford will ever get. We wound up trading the Dodge (which was my wife's vehicle by the way) in on this new Toyota Rav 4. 30 MPG and we'll save about $250 a month with the difference in payments and gas costs.

Bill, the old Ford will fit in with the Pondorosa Pines better than the Goat Hemi. The house is looking good. How about hosting a Mako reunion for the House Warming?

Might just do that before the house is done....... just as long as everyone brings their tool belts with them. Had our final rough-in inspection last Friday and now all we're lacking is the final for the certificate of occupancy. We'll be moving in about a week, but we have a secret handshake with the building inspector so they won't give us any flack over not having the occupancy permit yet. That will come about a month or two when I get all the railings and porch decking done. We have about 1000 sq ft of porch so thats a lot of work.

The interesting thing about JD is that it really doesn't have much rust at all. The picture is misleading. It's been an Arizona truck it's whole life so the only rust is surface stuff where the paint has come off around dents. I do need a tailgate though, but I'm sure I can find one at a local yard. All I have to do is figure out which years will interchange.

Here's the funny thing. Was at an Easter dinner at my neighbors across the street from our new house (he has a 77 F-250) anyway he mentioned that there was an old tailgate laying against his backyard fence when he bought the house a few years ago and he never threw it out. We went back and looked at it and guess what.......

It fits. He was glad to get rid of it and all I need now is a set of hinges.
