Bycast leather?
I know bycast leather isn't actually real leather.
But it cost a fraction of leather hides, and I have good experiences with bycast leather on my living room furnitures. Have any of you made up a bycast leather car interior? I already have a couple of used leater car seats. I'm planning to dye these dark brown and make the rest of the interior from dark brown bycast leather. The car is a '34 Roadster with rumble seat and that will be made with bycast leather as well. How many square feets should I order for such a job? |

recycle leather.
My son got a real leather sofa for $ 30 from craigs list from some one who was moving. The back side was all leather and has NO Wear. He dis -assembled it and has enough leather for his lakester.

I have found an Ebay seller that sell Bycast leather by square feet.
How much do you think I need to upholster a '34 Roadster with rumble seat? It will be the inner doors, top of dash, kick panels, below dash, behind doors, and the divider wall behind the front seats. Not the front seats, as they are in real leather already. At the rear it will not be anything else than the rumble seat. I won't be using any of it on the floor or the transmission cover. |

A yard of fabric that comes in a roll is 13.5 square feet. I would guess 8 to 10 yards would do it easily, so 108 to 135 square feet.
Be really careful what you buy, re-cast or by-cast leather is sold by the running yard, which is 36" by 54" or 3 ft. by 4 1/2 ft. They may be trying to make you believe what you're buying is real leather, which is not the case. The face of this stuff is 100% polyurethane, which is what Ultraleather is made of. The backing is 18 to 20% real leather which has been ground up and processed into a backing material. You really need to see what you're getting before you buy it. I see they are selling it on E-Bay for $1 a square foot, but it is in small pieces like 17 to 24 sq. ft. What you will get is pieces that are a little over 1 yard up to a 1 3/4 yards. That's not very useful for large pieces. If you buy this, you will need a lot more of than 10 yards worth than if you just buy what you need all in one long piece. I strongly urge you to buy from a reputable source.

Thanks for the input.
I have some problems finding other sources. When I google "bycast leather" I only get furniture stores, not anyone actually selling bycast leather by the yards. Do you know any reputable web stores? We once trashed a close to new sofa because of a small but very visible crack in the bycast fabric. I saved the rest of the fabric. I like that very dark brown color. My plans are to use this, but I need some more. When I find a good web store I will send them a sample and ask if they are able to match the color and quality. It is big quality differences in bycast leather too. We got a used bycast sofa for very cheap lately, for the youths living room downstairs. The fabric on this sofa is much thinner and not good compared to the fabric I saved from the trashed one. Last edited by staleg; 12-21-2011 at 12:22 AM. |
