Post C-4 or not to C-4

I have a '79 F-150 4x4,351M and a four gear. Iwould like to stuff a 351C in it's place while being built. Do (they) make bell housings to make this happen? If so who? C-4 measures about 5" between top bolts and the manual in the critter measures about 7"(Isuppose C-6)?

Question

Are you wanting to put a C4 behind the 351C? If so, the bolt pattern is the same as a small block FORD. The 351M and 400 (except early production 400) has the bolt pattern of a 385 Series (429/460).

I think this is what you are asking... <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Currently a very tired 351M resides in my '79. It has a four speed. The top bolts are wide and I assume this is a C-6 pattern. In order to dump a 351C in it's place I need a C-4 adapter or bell housing. Is there going to be a problem w/flywheel etc. If I mount a C-4 bell housing?

You keep referring to a "C4", which is a lightweight (though tough) automatic, when it sounds like you want to attach the 351C to the stock 4 speed ( which in that era should be a 3+OD version of the toploader). If you want to do that all you need is a bellhousing from any small block (or big six,300/240 &250 small car) of the same era, it would be the same for a 3spd since they have the same pattern. A fair sized salvage yard should have an assortment since it was the base engine (300/3spd) in pick-ups and vans from that period. If you want to attach a 351C with a C4 to your transfer case you'll need to find an adapter, probably from advance adapters. The second scenario will be more costly in money as well as time.
