C 4 transmission

My C 4 has a separate bell housing. Can I leave the bell housing and the torque converter attached to the engine when I pull the engine?

That's not a good idea, you could easily damage the Pump.

That is something you just can't do with a C4 - the bolts that attach the bell to the tranny - they are unreachable and inside of the bell housing

You can leave the converter on, but it is a bear to reassemble the tranny and get the steps in the pump in and in the correct order.

Also - that input shaft - that too becomes "interesting" (do you know which end goes into the tranny - shorter, 24 spline end goes in the clutch end)

I am trying to get to the root of an oil leak. It looks like the previous owner tried to fix it with new pan seals and a lot of gasket goo. The oil seems to be coming from inside the bell housing which tells me that it is probably the rear main seal. It is definitely oil and not fluid from the transmission.

All I saw was the lower bolts and I assumed that I could just unbolt it. Since I can't do that I will just undo the torque converter from the flywheel and take the engine out.

I am hoping that I can get the rear main seal out and another one back in without pulling the crank out.

can you get the oil pan off,as on most 302s have a 2piece rear seal and it can be easly changed in place.newer 5ltrs had a1 piece so engin or trans must come out,or moved back

Thanks for the input Cliff

I have the pan off and the rear seal was cocked off center a bit but could not have leaked the amount of oil that would come out on acceleration. I will try pulling the rear main off tomorrow and hopefully it is a two piece. I am not sure about getting the upper half out if it is a two piece. Tried that trick on an early olds V8 and didn't have very good luck. I understand that you can get a kit that will allow you to do that now. Ah, but I am getting ahead of myself.
